Hi
Ok, so I have no clue what I did but my computer won't start (I'm writing to you on my braillenote bt apex). So what it does is starts, then goes into a startup repair mode and comes back with failed to repair tried 22 times or something like that. Is there anything I can do or is my pc a goner? Is there some way I can reboot the thing and see if I can do adything. On a side note, does anybody know of any accessible antivirus and malware programs perhaps that they use? Thanks
It sounds like you're going to have to get into safe mode. And if you know exactly what the computer tells you when it says that the repair failed, that might help.
If you can get into safe mode, you might be able to disable a process that's harmful to your computer, but you might not. I don't know if you're somewhat sighted, have sighted assistance to tell you what the computer is saying or have some other means.
Honestly, my leaning on this is that you have some sort of file corruption that the computer cannot repair, which is stopping your OS from starting up. Something in the shell someplace. In this case, you will likely have to reinstall Windows, which would probably mean trying to see if you can get your stuff backed up onto an external drive if you've got anything you want to save.
Honestly, you may need to get a tech-savvy friend with a set of eyes, particularly if you're not great at computers yourself. They may be able to give you details which will allow you to more thoroughly diagnose your situation.
Sorry if I'm not all that helpful on this.
Hi
Sorry about the blank message
So, I do have a sighted assistant which is how I knew that my computer was doing what 1it was doing. How would I reboot an safe mode? My friend didn't know either. I can't do anything in safe mode alone because my screen reader would be disabled, right? thanks
Safe mode is typically f8. However, I'm doubting you'll be able to get in. We can help better if you anser a few questions. What brand computer, what OS? How did you shut it down last. Did you power off manually?
if you can not get into safe mode, do you have a windows DVD on hand, you can use it to repair your OS but beware that not all of your programs will be properly installed wen this is done. I believe its F1 to boot from CD then give it a sec to start booting the disk. Then press the letter R to start the recovery process. If tis does not work then I am not sure other then reinstalling or doing a factery recovery on your computer.
So, let me get this straight, press power button and hit f8? When last I powered off, I used cmd to shut it down doing shutdown -s My OS is win7 I do not believe that I have a windows dvd but I will see
Is your machine a branded system? HP DELL ETC? If so, it'll likely have a OS partition already there. As for trying to go in to safe mode, you can turn the computer on, and instantly start tapping f8. If it goes in to safe mode, I'd attempt a system restore. Start menu all programs, accessories, system tools system restore. Pick a date when the system was working and go from there. I've had two client machines where the behavior you describe has happend and I've not been able to get in to safe mode. You could attempt a repair with win 7 but not had a whole lot of luck with this process either as I used to under Windows XP. It may be that your only alternative is a system restore back to factory settings which would lose data, programs ETC. It'd be as the day you got the system. Hope some of this helps.
Ok, how would I do factory default?
depends on the brand of computer you have. Remember if you do this, you lose all documents Files ETC that you had. let us know what kind of machine you have please.
Yes, that depends.
Most will go in to the mode by.
Have your sighted friend watch the computer as it comes up.Soon as they see the company logo, start to pressquickly, or just hold down the F8 key, or F11 key if the F8 doesn't do it.
After that he or she will be able to see reset to factory.
I think in your case, that is what I'd do.
If you are really needing your files, and such, take it to a Office store that has a tech department, and pay them to do it for you. Office Depot, is one. The tech will be able to tell you if she or he can save your stuff.
If you don't care, just reset it as has been posted.
